What the NTN or registration number does
FBR e-enrollment places a person on the tax system and provides access to IRIS. For an individual, the 13-digit CNIC is used as the NTN or registration number. Companies and associations of persons use the registration number issued for the entity.
Registration does not by itself mean that all returns are filed or that the person appears on the Active Taxpayer List. Those are separate status and compliance questions.
Information commonly needed
The required information depends on whether the applicant is an individual, company or AOP. It may include identity information, mobile and email access, address, business details, bank information, ownership or partnership records and evidence relating to business premises.
- Use contact details controlled by the taxpayer
- Keep incorporation or partnership documents consistent
- Use the correct business and residential addresses
- Retain registration and filing acknowledgements
Filing through IRIS
FBR identifies IRIS as the online portal for income tax returns. First-time filers must register before filing. A filed return should be reviewed together with the wealth statement and supporting records where applicable.
Tax treatment changes with income type, residency, entity structure and the relevant tax year. A generic online checklist is not a substitute for assessment of the taxpayer's actual facts.
Check status, do not assume it
FBR provides an Active Taxpayer List status facility. A taxpayer should verify registration, filing and ATL status separately, especially before a transaction where withholding rates or proof of filer status matter.
Common questions
Questions people ask about this issue
Is a CNIC the NTN for an individual?
FBR states that an individual's 13-digit CNIC is used as the NTN or registration number after registration.
Does having an NTN make someone an active filer?
Not automatically. Registration, return filing and appearance on the Active Taxpayer List are related but distinct.
